Delicious Food & Drink in Horse & Groom Pub, Heathfield
A pub for dinner and lunch near Heathfield — traditional favourites, chargrilled steaks and seasonal plates, served with well-kept ales, wines and cocktails.
Our Kitchen
Great Food, Served With Passion
Everything is prepared in our kitchen using good produce, with a menu that balances the pub classics people come back for and lighter, more contemporary dishes. Whether you’re after a pub for dinner in Heathfield or the best place for lunch in Heathfield, dietary requirements are no trouble, just let us know.
Pub Food
Honest pub food, cooked from scratch
Our kitchen turns out the kind of generous, unhurried food you want to eat in a country pub, hand-rolled pies, slow-cooked stews, fresh fish and a board of seasonal specials that changes with the East Sussex year. Everything is made on the premises: pastry rolled by hand, gravy made from the pan, chips cut and cooked on site. No ready-meals, no shortcuts. If you’re looking for a pub for food and drinks in East Sussex, this is it.
We keep the menu short on purpose, so every dish gets the attention it deserves. Alongside the classics you’ll find lighter plates, a vegetarian option that’s never an afterthought, and a children’s menu of smaller versions of the favourites. It’s a nice pub for dinner near Heathfield, and a fine spot for dinner and drinks in Heathfield too, dietary requirements are no trouble, just let the team know when you book or order.
Sunday Roast
A Sunday roast worth the drive
Sundays at the Horse & Groom are built around the roast. A different roast of the day each week, beef, pork, lamb or chicken on rotation, with crisp roast potatoes, seasonal greens, a Yorkshire pudding, and proper gravy made from the roasting juices. There’s crackling when it’s pork day, stuffing on the side, and a vegetarian roast that’s a dish in its own right.
We serve roasts from opening through the afternoon, so whether you like an early lunch or a long, late one, there’s a table for you. Sundays fill up fast, so booking is strongly advised, and a glass of red from our list and a pudding to finish make the full Sunday of it.
Steak & Burgers
Chargrilled steaks and stacked burgers
Our chargrill runs hot and our steaks run generous. We serve aged ribeye, trimmed fillet and a sharing sirloin for two, all cooked to order over real flame, rested properly, and served with triple-cooked chips and a roast tomato. Add a house-made sauce, peppercorn, béarnaise, garlic butter or blue cheese, and a glass of red to match.
If a burger is more your style, ours start with aged beef, hand-pressed in the kitchen, and end stacked with mature cheddar, bacon and house sauce. The buttermilk chicken and a spiced bean and beetroot garden burger keep everyone happy, and every burger comes with proper hand-cut chips. It's a plate you need both hands for.
Drinks / Real Ales
A well-kept bar and a short wine list
The bar is the heart of the Horse & Groom. We keep a rotating line of local Sussex and Kent cask ales on the handpumps, alongside draught lagers and cider, a considered wine list of reds, whites, rosé and sparkling, and a short menu of house cocktails mixed by hand at the bar. It's a nice pub for drinks near Heathfield, whether you're stopping in for a pint or settling for the evening.
Our cellar is kept properly, so the beer arrives in good condition — ask for a taste before you commit if you can't decide. Freshly ground coffee is on for those settling in for the evening, and the bar team is always happy to recommend a glass or a pint to pair with what you're eating.
